Proyectada por Estudio Lamela y Richard Rogers Partnership, la Nueva Área Terminal (NAT) del Aeropuerto de Madrid-Barajas es la mayor obra civil aeroportuaria de Europa de los últimos años. Han sido casi nueve años de trabajo y 6.200 millones de euros de inversión para la nueva terminal, gracias a cuya construcción, el Aeropuerto de Madrid - Barajas podrá acoger a 70 millones de pasajeros al año, una cifra sólo superada por Atlanta y Chicago, y algo por encima del londinense aeropuerto de Heathrow.
La Nueva Área Terminal se halla al norte del Aeropuerto de Madrid-Barajas y se compone de dos edificios principales, T4 y T4S (T4 Satélite), con una superficie de 785.000 m2, además de un aparcamiento y nuevas carreteras de acceso.
Cuenta con un servicio de tren sin conductor para transporte de pasajeros, que recorre los dos kilómetros que separan la T4 y la T4S, con capacidad para transportar 6.500 pasajeros por hora, que circula cada dos minutos y tarda 4 en terminar el recorrido.
El nuevo Edificio Terminal (T4), con 39 posiciones de contacto para aviones, se compone de tres grandes módulos: el primer bloque para facturación, el siguiente para el control de seguridad y el tercero, para el embarque. El Edificio Satélite (T4S) ha sido construido para proporcionar más agilidad a las operaciones de embarque y desembarque internacional de la nueva T4 y cuenta con más de 26 posiciones de acceso directo para aviones.
La Nueva Área Terminal se caracteriza por un estilo arquitectónico muy vanguardista, que ha recibido varias distinciones, como el premio de Diseño T+L 2006 en la categoría de “Mejor Espacio Público” o el premio “Mejor Nuevo Aeropuerto” de la revista Wallpaper, destacando su construcción como un impresionante estudio en el uso de la luz y el espacio. Destaca la obtención del premio RIBA European Awards 2006, otorgado por el Royal Institut of British Architects, un reconocimiento internacional, que distingue la obra de la Nueva Área Terminal en el apartado de Edificios Públicos realizados en la Unión Europea, y que ha valorado especialmente la limpieza de las líneas de la T4 y el uso de materiales y detalles para crear un fantástico efecto, así como la funcionalidad de su diseño.
